Every parent wants their child to have the absolute best start in life and we all want to encourage our child’s development. The most important thing you can do with your very little baby is talk to them – talk about what you’re doing. These things may seem mundane, but this language forms the foundation for learning. I’ve seen parents bombard their toddlers with flash cards, even teaching them to identify the countries of the world on a map. A one year old doesn’t need that kind of knowledge. What they do need is to be exposed to the vocabulary of every day life. Just talk about whatever is happening in their day … getting them dressed, getting into the car, going for a walk – comment on the leaves, the cars etc that you are walking past, going to the supermarket …. whatever you are doing together.
